Withycombe Raleigh

Home
The villages of Withycombe Raleigh and Littleham make up the large conurbation which is now  Exmouth.
Withycombe Raleigh  is a parish and village, bounded on the west by the broad estuary of the river Exe, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of East Budleigh, petty sessional division of Woodbury, union of St. Thomas, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter.

The parish comprises part of the town of Exmouth, and is under the control of the Exmouth Urban District Council. The old parish church of St. John the Baptist was built in the 15th century, commonly called St. John's-in-the-Wilderness, was taken down.  The new church of St. John the Evangelist was built in 1864,

The Plymouth Brethren have a cemetery here about three-quarters of an acre in extent.

The charitable institution called " Point-in-View " "was founded in 1811 by the late Misses Parminter with a small Congregational chapel and a house for the minister, erected the same year.

There are  three hamlets at Bystock, Marpool and Hulham

Where to find parish register transcripts and copies

The best and most obvious place to view the Withycombe Raleigh parish registers is the Devon Heritage Centre in Exeter where all the originals, microfilms and fiche are kept. It is not always possible to visit Exeter and so copies or indexes are the next best thing. Below are some sites where you can find and dates available.
